melaniedavidson @ 11:51 am: I'm trying to find out about changes that were made between versions of Zork 1. I've tried searches and found a list of versions, lists of fixed bugs, and various hints and solutions, but not what I'm looking for. What I'm specifically wondering is whether it was ever possible to open the egg yourself without breaking the canary. I'm sure I remember doing that and winding up the canary before(and I'm dead certain I never beat the thief when I played it the first time), but everywhere I've looked says the thief has to do it, and I don't remember which version I was playing. It's been driving me crazy; can anyone help?

No chance at all that you played a copy of the old mainframe / PDP-10 versions of Zork before it got revised and broken into 3 parts for home computers, is there? The egg and canary were added to that version a few weeks before they added the songbird puzzle / bauble. If you caught an in-between version, it might have been possible to do so.

But AFAIK, in all z-code versions of Zork, opening the egg yourself results in breaking the canary.

It could have been; I was using someone else's computer so I don't know where they got their version. Thanks very much!
