teyunde @ 11:42 am: This Is How My Brain Works, Really.
(X-posted to personal journal.)

I spent most of yesterday evening waiting waiting in line at Barnes and Noble to meet Bruce Campbell, who was on tour to promote his new book. (Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my Army of Darkness DVD.) The volume chronicles his efforts to prepare for a supporting role in an A-list film; I had enough time to read the first eighty pages. In an early chapter he describes a visit to Sandusky, Ohio, where he studies with an unlicensed relationship consultant.

"Sandusky, Ohio. Huh, that sounds familiar. Wasn't that where... Oh cool!"

So when my turn came up, rather than shaking his hand and saying "Pleasure to meet you sir, I'm a great admirer of your work. What do you think of Nebraska?", I shook his hand and said "Pleasure to meet you sir, I'm a great admirer of your work. This is going to sound completely random, but have you ever played an extremely old video game called Leather Goddesses of Phobos?"

He looked at me blankly. "No. I'm not much of a gamer," he replied. "Why?"

"Oh, some bits in the first part of your book reminded me of it."

He shot me a Look. "So, in other words, you're accusing me of ripping them off?"

"Uh. No. I would prefer the terms 'homage' or 'in-joke'," I returned, trying not to stammer.

"Well, for the record, the answer is no," he stated flatly, scribbling his autograph inside the cover of my book. "They ripped me off."

Later research via Wikipedia informed me that A) Sandusky is a real place, and B) this sort of thing is actually a sensitive issue (see bottom of article). Oh well.

Wow, man...

You actually said that to him, based only on the shared mention of a town in Ohio?

What a leap, and an unfortunate one at that.
