Since you're having issues, can I safely assume that you're running Windows XP? Since RTZ was a DOS-based game (or at best, a Win 95), there are some compatibilty issues with XP. Here's a link to a site that should be helpful:

If nothing there helps, try googling something like "Return to Zork XP problems" or some such thing. I can't remember exactly what I did to fix it, but the game worked like a charm afterwards. Good luck!

Ah, well if you're running 98, you should still be able to run RTZ through DOS. 98 didn't have the capability to open a DOS window within that OS yet. But you shouldn't have any issues installing and running it that way... I say that, but it's been so long since I've worked with 98, I can't be positive.
